One day in KGP

By Abhisek Chakraborty

“Wake up boy it’s already 6.45 and you know that you have to reach for classes by 7,even we know that it’s all in vain but still we are trying our best to help you, don’t you realize you idiot” shouted mom.

That was the mother of our Hero, who is never punctual in timing and scoring marks, his mom has become his best enemy due to this ,but what may come he has decided he is the best and there is no reason to change his attitude.

7.30 AM…As usual our hero is late in private classes and again the teacher express his doubt towards his future and warned him to study hard to avoid a future of rickshawwalls.Again

Our hero felt bore like the other day and took the corner seat to become invisible to the teacher.

Suddenly he saw a lady is sitting just opposite to him and attending the classes for very first time,” cheers”   he said himself and started thinking of future but the dream didn’t

Last long as he felt shaky cause the teacher abused him in front of her and his first impression went for a toss. We can see now our hero has become pale and sitting with a pink face at the corner, but we know he will be back in mood very soon.

9.00AM….The classes got over, every one is coming out and Mr. Hero knows this is the time to begin the game. He set every thing in his mind but as he went to talk he found her father is waiting for her .The bird flown away with father.

“Hey hero” somebody called from back; he found it’s the local boys of the area and he knows they can be dangerous in their area in terms of KGP culture.

“Stop flying after that girl, one of our friends already trying for the same”

“I am not flying after her” hero replied.

“Good  …but keep in mind we will smash the face if any one tries to”

“Ok” and hero went out of the place.

11.30AM….He is late in school, but happy because he already informed his contacts about the incidence and they all have given him a free support, now the local fellows cant do anything to him, if they does there will be a  good fighting.

His school is one of the reputed schools in KGP, It’s known for the messy culture of Good, Bad and Worse students, our hero always been confused about his segment. He got friends from each class and being a footballer his reputation went up at the school.

1.30PM…It’s Tiffin hrs,so he gathered with his class mates at the class room, none of them use to get any Tiffin’s though, still this is best time as the entertainment is very high during this session, every day  one of his friend use to sing and other two use to play table during this break.

Today also it’s all the same but our hero didn’t enjoy much. Well we know the reason.

5.00PM…Just now he reached home and had a gentle fight with his mom over the food and he decide to have it from outside as the home food is not up to the mark in compare to noodles shop at gole bazaar.

He also informed mom that he will be late as he has to attend another tution at evening.

But we may guess that he is going to bunk the class cause of his grey mood.

5.30PM…And we are right, he landed to play ground and decided to sit there till late evening with other friends.

Actually this ground and friends attract him much, every day he use to join this place after private tuitions and all the discussions use to take place out there, from personal to social every topic been discussed everyday and all the guys are master of general knowledge due to this culture.

So without delay our hero dragged his topic and received a thousand opinions from others, some said its complete waste of time as fools fight for unknown girls more on the exams are on head, but others said optimist’s rules the world you can’t be a looser mainly when you have received threats for the same, there is no chance to escape, and they also confirmed that they are going to provide him full support if needed.

9.30PM…Hero reached home ,he is quite confused about his task now, suddenly and all the thoughts went off as he found his dad in front of him in a bad mood ,our hero can guess that his mom done the trick by saying his indiscipline carrier plan.

“How is your study going on??” asked father.

“Going good” he replies.

“Why do you think us fool?? Do you think we can’t notice your activities” father shouted.

Now our hero is 5 feet under the earth. Some how he escaped by saying “I will study hard now onwards”

10.15PM…Dinner time, Mr. Hero again saved himself by avoiding his father at the table, he joined his mom for dinner after his father went off.

Now we can see that he is not feeling much hungry, well we know the reason but his mom wont, so she asked

“What happen?? Why you are going short of diet??”

“Nothing”

“Are you all right?” she asked.

“I told that I am all fine, why don’t you understand?” hero roars.

Mom told a thousand words but didn’t reach to him, he somehow finished the food and went to his study room.

12.30AM…. We can see the books are wide open but the hero in his own world, even we don’t know what he is thinking, suddenly he wrap up the books and went for sleep.

What happen to him, this is not his normal time to sleep?

God Knows

May be he wants to reach tuitions on time tomorrow….

8.00AM…..The alarm rings in the mobile, the hero gets up, he has to reach office by 9.30 as the rules are very strict in MNCs .But still he is not feeling to wake up as the last nights dream was very sweet, after all it was about his old days at KGP.

S.E.Rly Mixed H.S. (EM) School

 By Aritra Nayak

The S.E.Rly Mixed H.S. (EM) School established in the beginning of the 19th century in 1899 has been one of the heritage schools of the town as it is over 100 years old and infact is the oldest school in the city and still continues to produce some of the brightest students in the town. The schools’ motto is the inspirational lines from the poem Ulysses by Lord Tennyson, “Play up, play up and play the game” which has become the guiding light for the school and its students. The navy blue and sky blue uniforms of the students of the school and their badges are a pride for the entire city as over the years the school has brought with a legacy of giving a string of good results and students who have added to the pride of the school. One of the other most important achievements of the school is that it was the first school in the city to promote co-education and thus serving a big social cause of equal rights between girls and boys. The school is affiliated to the I.C.S.E. Board, New Delhi and has Arts, Science and Commerce streams for intermediate standards as options. The school is located just by the cities one of the most important landmarks the GoleBazar over bridge. The school just does not impart academic education but helps its students cultivate and improve their overall talents by promoting an entire façade of co-curricular activities out of which the most eye catching and coveted one is the week long co-curricular competitions held every year in the first week of September as a part of the Teachers’ Day celebrations where not just the students from the school but from schools all over the district come to take part in a gruelling contest among budding singers, debaters ,quizzer and artists, seriously a carnival of talent which the city waits for every year.

The school also has one of the most liberal so to say environment where students get enough time to exploit their talents and areas of interest and thus has been instrumental in bringing forth their individual talents. Also the school boasts of good academic infrastructure and a very helpful and nurturing environment supported by its caring teachers. The alumnus of the school has a lot of engineers, doctors and lawyers from reputed schools from all over the country as well teachers, sportspersons. The school recently has opened up the computer section for its students to keep up with the changing trends. To end with the school though it may look humble with the single storey buildings and easily inconspicuous gates but beyond those gates lies a kingdom full of knowledge and wisdom waiting for the young minds and talents of the city.

Mixed School

S E Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School (EM) was established on 13th November in the year 1899 by the British. At that time, the railway town of Kharagpur was under Bengal-Nagpur Railway. The school, then, was affiliated to Senior Cambridge and most of its students were foreigners. It was the first school in the town to promote co-education of boys and girls. This school was known for its liberal outlook, modernity and for producing exceptionally genius minds.

Times have changed now, and so have the people, but the underlying motto of this school has remained undeterred: “PLAY UP, PLAY UP, AND PLAY THE GAME”. I have grown up listening and singing this refrain as a routine without realizing that I have absorbed it within my soul. SERMHSS imparts education from the kindergarten to the 12th standard with Arts, Science, and Commerce streams at the intermediate level. The school has well equipped laboratories, a modern computer lab, and a very good faculty. At present, the school is affiliated to ICSE and ISC board and has a record of nourishing the best brains in town.

Once you enter the premises, you are in the heart of a colonial settlement with single-storied red and white coloured buildings. The grumpy old ceiling fans hanging from the high ceilings, the sleepy students in their blue uniform and the incessant noise of trains in the background gives you the feel of a typical lazy afternoon. The school compound is scattered with immense green area to play and loiter around, not to forget the cool shades of the age old trees. The school also has a small park at the entrance which students hardly have an opportunity to enter; at least I didn’t. The broken merry-go-round, the rotten see-saw, the rusted swings are more of an asset to the institution rather than being functional.

The major functions that the school celebrates are Teachers’ Day, which is a grand day for the students for showing their love and affection to their teachers, Foundation Day i.e., on 13th November every year celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Independence Day, Republic Day, Annual Sports Day, and the grand Annual Function. Apart from this, various other competitions, both academic as well as cultural, occur every now and then, ranging from IQ tests and Quizzes to debates, skits and classical dance.

From my personal experience of 13 long years, I can say that this school has not only given me bookish knowledge but also helped me develop as an individual, exploring and nurturing my strengths and coping up with my weaknesses. The school provides ample opportunities for the students to exploit their talents, thanks to the perennial curricular activities. The senior students are given the power to host functions and take important decisions, thus sowing the seeds of management at an early stage.

Kharagpur : Nomenclature

In Bengali dictionary there is no literary meaning of the word ‘kharagpur’. Thus the word Kharagpur should have been derived from some terms, themes, subjects. It is said that Kharagpur is named after the old Khargeswar temple which was established 400 years back by  King Kharag Singh Pal . But it is also depicted in Mahabharata that Kharagpur exists from the age of Pandavas. So, Kharagpur was not named from the temple, rather the famous historic temple “Khargeswar” was named after “Kharagpur”.

Dr. Shyamapada Bhowmik in his book “Kharagpur: Itihas O Sanskriti” has thrown some light regarding this subject.

One of the popular hearsay is the place is named after the king of Bishnupur, Khargamalla at 841AD. But that time Kharagpur was ruled by Bengal King Devpal (810-850), an emperor per-excellence of Pal dynasty, whose far-flung kingdom was extended from Bramhaputra to Sindhu River and even in south India, which means almost the whole India was under him. So it is most unlikely that the place will be named after some other King who ruled later. Thus this is a rumor again.

If we split the word in two parts Kharag – Pur , then we have separate meaning. The literal meaning from the Samsad Dictionary are given below.

Kharag –n, a large falchion for immolating beasts; a large falchion; the horny appendage on the nose of the rhinoceros.
Pur –n, a house, an abode, a city, a town, a village.

The combination gives a meaning of the word — “A place inhabited with armed (with scimitar or sword or falchion) people”. This nomenclature is justifiable as it is mentioned in Mahabharata that this area was ruled by the Demon King Hiramba. It is a place of michological significance as Pancha Pandavas spent a part of their repatriation years here. Bhim had fallen in love with Hirimba, sister of Hiramba; which is why annoyed Hiramba clashed with Bhim and was killed by Bhim at the same place where Khargeswar Temple is located. So it can be concluded that Kharagpur was inhabited by armed people in ancient age and the name “Kharagpur” came from them.
